Fresh off her triumph on the indoor courts in Ostrava, Aryna Sabalenka starts her last campaign of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jasmine Paolini. The top seed, who is making her debut in this tournament, began slow against the Italian as she trailed the opening set by 1-4 and also dropped her serve once in the second. Last month, Sabalenka became one of the four players to win multiple titles in 2020. Having already won the Premier-5 title at Doha, the Belarusian went on a resilient run in Ostrava. She dug out from impossible positions, a 2-5 third-set deficit against Gauff and 0-6, 0-4 down against Sorribes Tormo, to win her seventh WTA title.

Stefanie Voegele dug deep to level off a 3-5 deficit in the first set (saved a set point) and fended off 3/3 breakpoints in the second to beat Viktoria Kuzmova, 7-6, 6-3. Having started her campaign in the qualifyings, the Swiss player has now won three matches in a row after coming into this event with a 1-6 post-pandemic win-loss. This is Voegele’s eighth appearance in Linz in the last nine years, skipping only its 2017 editions since she debuted at the Austrian tournament. While she hasn’t done past the second round in the last five years, the 30-year-old had some good results in her early visits, a semifinal finish in 2013 and a quarterfinal in the following year.
