Aryna Sabalenka had in store arguably the most astonishing comeback of the season. She trailed Sara Sorribes Tormo, a first-time Premier quarterfinalist, by 0-6, 0-4 and faced a couple of more breakpoints for further degradation. The third seed went on to win 12 games in a row to hand the Spanish qualifier a soul-crushing defeat. During this two-hour match, Sabalenka took a medical time-out for blisters on her left foot. The Belarusian had also required physio’s assistance in her previous match against Cori Gauff for blisters on her right foot, following which she went on to beat the 16-year-old American, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6, from a 2-5 deficit in the deciding set.

Brady’s indomitable form on hard courts has now seen her win 25 matches in the season. Until the start of 2020, the 25-year-old has never made it past the last-16 stage of a Premier or higher level tournament. Ten months later, she is enjoying her fourth such appearance after Brisbane (QF), Dubai (SF), and US Open (SF). Brady holds a 1-4 record in tour-level semifinals. The lone victory came against phenom Gauff at Lexington a couple of months ago, when she went on to claim the International title. During that triumphant run, she dropped just 24 games across her five matches, which remains the fewest of any title run on the tour this season.
