Andrey Rublev vs. Norbert Gombos – Prediction – ATP Vienna (Austria) 26.10.2020

H2H: Andrey Rublev v Norbert Gombos – comparison.

Norbert Gombos can be a dangerous player in these conditions, and he even won the pair’s previous indoor hard court meeting in Orleans Challenger 2016. Regardless, the Russian has come a long way over the last 12 months, and he should have no problems in winning this one.

Andrey Rublev becomes only the second player (after Novak Djokovic) to lift four titles on the main tour this season after he emerged victorious on the indoor hard courts in St.Petersburg a couple of weeks ago, where he defeated the likes of Denis Shapovalov and Borna Coric. After gaining a lot of confidence and momentum in the second half of the 2019 season, the talented Russian made a flying start to 2020 by winning consecutive titles in Doha and Adelaide in the opening two weeks of the season. Though the tour suspension came at a wrong time for the Russian, he did not let it affect his momentum as he has delivered some impressive results since the restart by winning the title in Hamburg and St.Petersburg and progressing to the quarterfinal in the US Open and French Open.

These impressive results eventually helped the 23-year-old Andrey Rublev make his top 10 debut and attain his career-high ranking of #8, which is an incredible achievement considering he was struggling with fitness problems since the first half of the 2018 season and even exited the top 100 group early last year. Andrey Rublev, who has gone 7/1 in indoor hard courts so far in 2020, now makes his fourth consecutive appearance in Vienna, where he reached the quarterfinals last year by defeating Alexander Bublik and Hyeon Chung.

Norbert Gombos is fortunate to be in the main draw of ATP Vienna this week as he trailed his final qualifying round match against the world #529 Vitaliy Sachko by a set and break at one stage and later trailed the deciding set by a break, 5-7 6-4 6-4. The big-serving Slovakian produced some fine performances for a few weeks after the restart, but that run seems to have come to an end as he was beaten in straight sets by Sumit Nagal in the qualifying stages of ATP Cologne last week and very nearly suffered a huge upset at the hands of the ATP Tour debutant Vitaliy Sachko on Sunday.
