Alexander Zverev vs. Diego Schwartzman – Prediction – ATP Cologne 2 (Germany) 25.10.2020

H2H: Alexander Zverev v Diego Schwartzman – comparison.

Though Alexander Zverev is the better player on indoor hard courts and won the pair’s previous matchup on the surface in Paris Masters 2018, Diego Schwartzman edges the H2H series 2-1, and he has got an excellent chance of winning his maiden title on indoor hard courts this Sunday, considering the German’s recent fitness struggles.

Alexander Zverev was not in the best physical state when he lost to Jannik Sinner in the round of 16 in the French Open earlier this month, and he was again dealing with some fitness problems when he met the talented Italian in the semifinal of ATP Cologne on Saturday. The top-ranked German looked in a bit of trouble in the early stages but recovered quickly, exchanged a couple of breaks of serve before going on to secure the win in straight sets, 7-6 6-3 against Jannik Sinner.

“I was playing a player I just lost to at Roland Garros. That was still in the back of my head. I was not going to lose today. He [Jannik Sinner] is an up and coming superstar. I think he is going to be Top 10 very shortly. I think he is going to be competing for the biggest tournaments in the world,” said Alexander Zverev after the win. World #7 Alexander Zverev hasn’t been entirely convincing with his performance so far this week as he was taken to the distance by the struggling John Millman and Adrian Mannarino, and thrice dropped his serve in the first set against Jannik Sinner.

Nevertheless, the German is currently on a seven-match winning streak and bids to win consecutive titles in Cologne. Alexander Zverev maintained his record of winning at least one title every season since 2016 by emerging victorious in the inaugural edition of ATP Cologne last week, where he dropped only six games against Felix Auger Aliassime in the title-decider. Twice Alexander Zverev has won back-to-back titles on the main tour so far in his young and successful career — champion in Washington and Montreal Masters in 2017 and Munich and Madrid Masters in 2018.

Diego Schwartzman edged past last week’s ATP Cologne (first leg) runner-up Felix Auger Aliassime in a closely-fought semifinal match on Saturday and will now face last week’s champion Alexander Zverev in the finals on Sunday. For someone who has spent most of his time competing on clay courts and has played only 33 matches on indoor hard courts (21/12 in career), it’s incredible that Diego Schwartzman has already played three championship matches on the surface. However, he lost all those three matches against Richard Gasquet and Jo Wilfried Tsonga in Antwerp 2016 and 2017 and Dominic Thiem in Vienna 2019. Overall, the top-ranked Argentinian has gone 3-6 in tour-level championship matches so far in his career, including losing the recent such match to Novak Djokovic in Rome Masters last month.
