Ajax vs Willem II – Prediction (Eredivisie – 06.12.2019)

Preview and Teams Comparison.

Unbeaten leaders Ajax (W13, D2) appear streets ahead of the rest, especially at home where they have won 22 of their last 23 league games (D1), with 20 of those seeing half-time/full-time victories. Moreover, the hosts scored 2+ goals in each of those 23 Eredivisie games. All but one home game this campaign has seen Ajax win with a -2 handicap, whilst scoring a whopping 28 goals (4.0 average per match) for just two conceded! Perhaps unsurprising then, Ajax have scored more goals so far in 2019/20 (home & away) than at this stage in any other Eredivisie season this decade (3.47 average per match).

Willem II are prone to start with a bang and fizzle out, evidenced by shutting out opponents in the opening 15 minutes of games, whilst scoring six themselves. Furthermore, from the 76th minute onwards they are yet to score whilst conceding five. Subsequently, 73.91% of the Eredivisie goals Willem have scored came before half-time, while two thirds of their shipped goals came in the second half. Four of Willem’s five league defeats this season came by a 2+ goal margin, and a repeat could be on the cards here, as 11 of their last 12 visits to Amsterdam ended with similar or greater margins of defeat (W1, L11: 47-4 aggregate scoreline, in all competitions).

Players to watch: Noa Lang became only the second Ajax player to score a hat-trick on his full Eredivisie debut since Henk Groot in 1959; two of the strikes came after half-time. Former Ajax man Che Nunnelly was involved in three of Willem’s four goals last time out (one goal, two assists), and scored twice in a recent 2-1 victory over ‘Big Three’ side, PSV.

Stat attack: Ajax are the second-best disciplined Eredivisie side, receiving 1.07 bookings per-match on average. Erik ten Hag has won seven of his eight H2Hs with Willem (W7, L1), and all three against Adrie Koster. Willem’s away league games average 1.86 first-half goals per-match.
