H2H: Adrian Mannarino v Mackenzie McDonald – comparison.
Experience and superior record on indoor hard courts make Adrian Mannarino the favorite in the pair’s first-ever meeting. However, there isn’t much between them at the moment, and anyone could win this evenly-poised battle for a place in the semifinal of ATP Nur Sultan.
Third seed Adrian Mannarino is safely through to the quarterfinal of ATP Nur Sultan after comfortably dispatching Yuichi Sugita in straight sets. It was the left-handed Frenchman’s first match of the campaign as he received a bye in the first round. The win against former world #36 Yuichi Sugita was arguably Adrian Mannarino’s best performance of the season as he was in complete control of the match right from the start and dropped only two games. Moreover, he did not face a breakpoint on his serve and created 13 such chances on the Japanese’s serve.
Former world #22 Adrian Mannarino snapped his five-match losing streak and made his first quarterfinal appearance of the season (on the main tour) in Cologne last week, where defeated Alexei Popyrin and Miomir Kecmanovic before taking a set off Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinal. The loss against Alexander Zverev in Cologne also ended the Frenchman’s three-match winning streak in the quarterfinal on indoor hard courts. He has won over 200 matches on the surface so far in his career and also played two championship matches in Moscow 2019 and 2018.
Mackenzie McDonald got the better of the Kazakh #1 Alexander Bublik in straight sets, and the experienced Andreas Seppi in three sets to secure his quarterfinal berth in Nur Sultan, 6-3 6-2 and 3-6 6-3 6-3, respectively. This is a much-needed result for the former world #57 Mackenzie McDonald, who had won only one main draw match in ATP Tour events this year and even dropped out of the top 200 group in ATP Tour rankings. In an attempt to bag a few wins and gain some confidence, Mackenzie McDonald stepped down a level and competed in a Challenger event in Istanbul last week, and it worked to an extent as the American won four matches as a qualifier to reach the quarterfinal — lost to the left-handed Martin Klizan in three sets.
